CLIFTON: I quite agree.

LONDON: But still, we have your poem “In Salem”—there’s a lot of anger and that poem is gorgeous. What about anger?

CLIFTON: Well, first of all, I don’t think you can get terribly angry with anyone or anything that you don’t care anything about. I was saying to my class that black people love America—which is why they’re so angry so often. Loving someone does not mean that they don’t make you angry, that you don’t see their faults. To pretend that things don’t bother you does something awful to you. It seems to me that anger, perhaps like suffering, can be redemptive sometimes.
